This is a day when darkness comes
Only by closing eyelids,
Where sun shines at perfect angles
Upon your braid of wild roses.

It is a day to live by water,
To sit on warm, soft sand
Or to swing your feet at the end of a dock
Into the cool salty splashes and surges

That slightly sting the scratch
Given earlier by a peccary or a gargoyle.
It is a day to block all worries
From minds, to bask like familiar lizards

Beneath the brilliant rays of sun.
It is a day to take in the salty breeze,
Smelled miles from the strand,
To remember childhood excursions beneath docks,
Spearing rats or crabs, and smile

Because it seems like years ago,
A distant memory when absent friends were present.
Today is a day to love,
To reflect within yourselves,

To experience silence as peace,
To find yourself beneath
The warmth of the sun,
With your feet dipped in the sea.
