One-Handed Edged Weapons are, for the most part, more commonly
known as "swords," though there are a few exceptions.
Basic sword construction is simple: a long blade with a grip. However,
there are many varieties of swords, offering a great diversity of
options and versatility in use. For these reasons, among others,
One-Handed Edged weapons are the most popular weapons in Elanthia.
There are 15 standard categories of One-Handed Edged Weapons:
The backsword is a somewhat of a cross between
a broadsword and a scimitar. Its single-edge blade is
wide and heavy, doing great crushing damage. Near the
tip, it is most often curved to provide a decent amount
of damage from slashing or puncture.
Bastard swords are a hybrid between two-handed
and one-handed weapons. Larger than a standard sword,
but not as long as the claidhmore, the bastard sword has
a grip long enough to be held with both hands on occasion.
The dagger is the simplest stabbing weapon.
It is composed of a small blade, usually around 6",
and is lightweight. The abilities of a dagger may vary
depending on its blade size.
The estoc is a fairly unique sword in that
it's blade is a diamond section with no cutting edge,
rather than the normal flat blade. Estocs are used primarily
as a thrusting weapon.
Axes come in many varieties, but their basic
construction is simple: A large flat blade, sometimes
with one edge, sometimes with two, attached at the end
of a haft which may be made from a wide variety of materials.
A handaxe is smaller than its cousin, the waraxe, and
can be wielded in a single hand.
The katana is a medium-length sword with
a deadly sharp edge and finely-hone balance. Traditionally,
it is carried in the belt or sheath with the cutting
edge upwards. This way it is possible to draw the sword
and cut in single motion.
Katanas are a hybrid between two-handed and one-handed
weapons. When used in one hand, the katana will
require both one
handed edged and two-handed
skill.
Unique in their construction, in that the
handle of the weapon was built at right angles to the
blade, the katar was a thrusting blade with a blade designed
to penetrate armor, specifically chain mail. The handle
was made up of two parallel bars connected by two or more
crosspieces, one of which is at the end of the side bars
and is fastened to the blade. The blades are always double-edged
and generally straight.
The main gauche is an off-hand weapon used
to parry an opponent's blade. It provides defensive bonus
to the user, but it is advised that the user be trained
in wielding two weapons at once.
The whip-blade is an unusual slashing sword that is
similar to a scimitar, though the blade has slits to
remove some of the weight. The "whip" in the whip-blade
name is not from flexibility of the blade, rather it
is due to the whipping action of the wielder's arms.
As light and very sharp blades, whip-blades can be
quite lethal against unarmored or lightly armored foes,
but they lack effectiveness against heavier armors.
A skilled whip-blade wielder can be quite impressive
to observe, but whip-blades are seldom used outside
of the Dhe'nar culture that developed the style, due
to the awkwardness and fatiguing nature of the fighting
style. The whip-blade is a favored choice among Dhe'nar
duelists. Noi'sho'rah, the legendary Dhe'nar master,
is the only fighter known to use two whip-blades at
once.
