Death
Help
Death
can come from magical spells, weapons, the claws and fangs
of creatures, poisons, disease, and a variety of other sources.
If you die, don't panic. This isn't as serious as it is in
the real world. You never lose levels and you keep
the items you have on your body when you die. Death
will slow you down. How long you are slowed depends
how you die and return to life.
In GemStone, you usually have about ten minutes for a Cleric
or Paladin to raise you, bringing you back to life.
This deadline can be extended via the Cleric spell Preservation
305, or the white flasks generated through the treasure system.
If you are raised, you will recover from your death relatively
rapidly.
Characters not returned to life by a Cleric
or Paladin will eventually decay. A
character who decays will take longer to recover from death
than someone who is raised.
If you do not wish to wait for help you may enter the DEPART command. Be
aware, a voluntary Depart will take longer to recover from
than a natural Decay.
Finally, it is possible for powerful
creatures or supernatural forces to drain your spirit from
you. This instant death and decay is called spirit
death. This
form of death takes a long time to recover from.
Deeds will always reduce the time it
takes to recover from a death. To
receive the favor of a deed you must make a suitable offering
to a god. Where
and how to make this offering is a puzzle left to the players
to figure out.
The exact details of death recovery are explained
below.
Resurrection with Deeds
You were raised and have Deeds. Not bad!
- Statistic recovery at 4% per minute
- Constitution Loss: 1 point + 1 point for additional
recent deaths
- Experience absorption is unchanged
Resurrection without Deeds
Oops! You forgot to make a deed offering to the
gods, but fortunately a Cleric or Paladin has interceded
on your behalf. Things could be a lot worse.
- Statistic recovery at 2% per minute
- Constitution Loss: 3 points + 1 point for additional
recent deaths
- Reduced health, Stamina, spirit, and mana recovery rate
for next 2000 experience
- Slower absorption of next 500 experience points
Decay with Deeds
It seems nobody has gotten around to raising your corpse,
but at least you had deeds and the gods still love you.
- Statistic recovery at 1% per minute
- Constitution Loss: 3 points + 1 point for additional
recent deaths
- Reduced health, Stamina, spirit, and mana recovery rate
for next 2000 experience
- Slower absorption of next 1000 experience points
Decay without Deeds and DEPART or
Spirit Death with Deeds
The cost of death is going up.
- Statistic recovery at 1% per minute
- Constitution Loss: 3 points + 1 point for additional
recent deaths
- Reduced health, Stamina, spirit, and mana recovery rate
for next 5000 experience
- Slower absorption of next 2000 experience points
DEPART or Spirit Death without Deeds
- Statistic recovery at 1% per minute
- Constitution Loss: 3 points + 1 point for additional
recent deaths
- Reduced health, Stamina, spirit, and mana recovery rate
for next 10000 experience
- Slower absorption of next 4000 experience points
Chrism Gems
The chrism gems created by the Cleric spell Holy
Receptacle can be used to mitigate
statistic recovery weakness, reducing it significantly. Players
can keep chrism gems for emergencies, like major invasions,
allowing Clerics to return fallen heroes to the fray within
minutes.
Beginner's Luck
Characters under level 10 will not lose Constitution for recent deaths. Additionally,
they recuperate from all other penalties at twice the normal rate.
Modifiers and Caps
Constitution loss for recent deaths
caps at 5.
The cumulative maximum reduction will be capped at 25. These
points will be recouped at a rate of 1 point per 2000 exp
gained.
Chrism gems mitigate this temporary Constitution
loss, reducing it by up to 2 points.
There is a way for characters to recoup
these temporary losses without spending time with slow experience
absorption, but it will require an investment of silvers.
