A pole arm is a weapon with a long haft, with a cutting edge attached
to one end. That cutting edge may be anything from a small blade
to an axe. Pole arms are used to cut, thrust, or club enemies.
Pole arms can be either one handed or two handed, granting a large
degree of flexibility as far as shield training goes. Generally
pole arms deal a large amounts of damage. The lance specifically
has the highest damage factor against skin than any other weapon.
Though there are a variety of names for pole arms in GemStone IV,
they come in 9 distinct categories:
A halberd is a pole arm with a long haft topped with
a blade that combines an axe head, a point and a beak.
A variant of the halberd, called the naginata, is
rumored to be available in special shops. The naginata
has similar, but enhanced properties, as the halberd.
Hammers of Kai (named for Lord
Kai, Master of Combat) are essentially long poles
equipped with a war hammer at one end. The size ratio
of the hammer to the pole usually demands that the spiked
portion of the hammer be used to inflict any real damage.
