Two-handed weapons are weapons which require both hands to grasp,
thus can not be used with a shield. The weapons which belong to
this group resemble weapons from many of the other groups. However,
there is a distinct difference in the sheer size and weight of these
weapons. In general, two-handed weapons hit a great deal harder
and do more damage than one-handed weapons. The trade-off is less
defense offered by a shield.
Though they go by dozens of names, there are nine primary categories
of two-handed weapons:
Bastard swords are a hybrid between two-handed
and one-handed edged weapons.
Larger than a standard sword, but not as long as the claidhmore,
the bastard sword has a grip long enough to be held with
both hands on occasion.
The claidhmore is an especially massive
variant of the two-handed sword.
Its enormous bulk provides natural critical weighting
to the weapon, making the claidhmore the weapon of choice
of many warriors.
Similar to the morning
star, the flail consists of a spiked rod or ball suspended
from a haft by a chain. The flail, however, is considerably
more massive and requires both hands to wield.
A flamberge is a large sword which requires
two hands to wield. Its most notable feature is the flamboyant
shape of its blade which is curved radically, as if it
were aflame.
The military pick is related to the crowbill,
however it's large size requires that it be wielded with
both hands. It is constructed primarily of two spikes
at right angles to a long haft.
The quarterstaff is a basic weapon which
consists primarily of a long length of wood. The quarterstaff
requires two hands to hold, however, both ends of the
staff can be utilized in order to deal damage to an
opponent.
The war mattock evolved from tools used to dig trenches.
Much like the military pick,
the mattock bears a spike which is attached at a right
angle to the haft. However, on the other side the war
mattock bears a flat edge which was once used for digging.
The war mattock is a large weapon and requires two hands
to wield.
The katana is a medium-length sword with a deadly
sharp edge and finely-hone balance. Traditionally,
it is carried in the belt or sheath with the cutting
edge upwards. This way
it is possible to draw the sword and cut in single
motion.
Katanas are a hybrid between two-handed and one-handed
weapons. However, when used in two hands, the
katana will require only two-handed
skill.
