Pole Arms

A pole arm is a weapon with a long haft, with a cutting edge attached to one end. That cutting edge may be anything from a small blade to an axe. Pole arms are used to cut, thrust, or club enemies.

Pole arms can be either one handed or two handed, granting a large degree of flexibility as far as shield training goes. Generally pole arms deal a large amounts of damage. The lance specifically has the highest damage factor against skin than any other weapon.

Though there are a variety of names for pole arms in GemStone IV, they come in 9 distinct categories:

Awl-Pike
 
Other names: korseke, military fork, ranseur, runka, scaling fork, spetum
Damage type: puncture, crush
Description: A pike is a basic pole arm consisting of a long haft topped with a simple pointed blade.
Wielded: Two Handed

Halberd
 
Other names: bardiche, bill, brandestoc, croc, falcastra, falx, fauchard, glaive, godendag, guisarme, half moon, hippe, pole axe, scorpion, scythe, naginata
Damage type: puncture, crush, slash
Description:

A halberd is a pole arm with a long haft topped with a blade that combines an axe head, a point and a beak.

A variant of the halberd, called the naginata, is rumored to be available in special shops. The naginata has similar, but enhanced properties, as the halberd.

Hammer of Kai

Damage type: puncture, crush
Description: Hammers of Kai (named for Lord Kai, Master of Combat) are essentially long poles equipped with a war hammer at one end. The size ratio of the hammer to the pole usually demands that the spiked portion of the hammer be used to inflict any real damage.

Description: Javelins are pole arm that resemble pikes, however they tend to be a bit shorter and are sometimes thrown.

Description: Similar to javelins, pilum are shorter pole arms.  The haft of most pilum are topped with an elongated spike or point.
